Casual Ableism
Casual Ableism. Casual Abelism is stopping a hard of hearing person, who is trying to do her grocery shopping, repeatedly to ask to pet the Hearing Dog accompanying her, and getting annoyed with the HOH person when she (a) doesn’t hear you; (b) needs to move on; (c) asks you to please not pet her dog without asking, or; (d) has to correct her dog for being distracted by adults trying to get the dog’s attention. Casual ableism is also having a hearing person become angry with a HOH person, because the hearing person took a sign language class, and the HOH person does not know how to sign.
